This beautifully colored and engraved map is precisely executed and shows an incredibly detailed plan of the city of Boston as it existed in 1842 as well as Charlestown, South Boston and East Boston and areas of Boston Harbor, the Charles River and the Mystic River. There are also smaller sections of Cambridge, Roxbury and Dorchester on the map. A striking aspect of the map is that it shows Boston and the surrounding water before large areas were filled for development, in particular in the Back Bay area. This Boston map is from the Society for the Diffusion of Knowledge (SDUK) atlas. The SDUK was formed in 1826 by a small group of eminent London gentlemen with the purpose of promoting adult education and self-education among the working and middle classes. The Society did this primarily through an extensive, nonprofit publishing enterprise. One of the group's most successful ventures was the publication of a series of more than 200 maps in an atlas of unsurpassed (for its day) comprehensiveness, quality and cheapness.
