Description: Manuscript Letter Regarding the Health of British Artist William Etty Title: Manuscript Letter Regarding the Health of British Artist William Etty Publication: 1834 Description: Manuscript Letter Regarding the Health of British Artist William Etty, [1834]. 7.5 x 4.5 inches. 1pp. Manuscript letter, folded twice. Letter was torn horizontally in the center and repaired with archival tape by previous owner. "K. J. Turner" stamped on verso. Good condition. It is unclear who wrote the letter, but it seems likely it was written for Etty by another. The previous dealer believed it to be Etty's hand but that cannot be confirmed. The letter is unsigned. Letter reads: "14?, Buckingham St Strand Tuesday April 8. Mr. Etty presents his respectful compliments to the President and Council, and regrets to say that in consequence of a severe attack of Rheumatic Fever, accompanied with cough and other indispositions he has been completely paralyzed for the time in his hands and limbs, and helpless as a child. The consequence of which is being [entirely?] unable to complete two compositions of poetical subjects he had nearly ready for the Exhibition." William Etty (1787-1849) was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts known for his history paintings with nudes. This letter is probably referring to Etty's illness and is inability to show more paintings at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition of 1834. From wiki: "In February 1834, Etty became seriously ill, and was incapacitated for four months. Unable to paint, he exhibited only two already-completed paintings in the 1834 Summer Exhibition, 'Elizabeth Potts' and 'The Cardinal'." Good condition / None.
