Description: UP FOR AUCTION: Antique Print : " The Philosopher" Antique, Original, 1885, 7x6" Print from Antoine Masson This Black & White print shows a man - deep in thought - stroking his big beard. This is a vintage, original, 1885 Print from an old set of antique art prints which were sold in the USA in the 1880's. The set was entitled "Selections of Modern Art". The set was published in 1885 by D. Appleton & Co., Bond Street, New York. The set consists of "a choice selection of engravings and etchings...representing the work of some of the best-known painters and sculptors of recent years." It is dated 1885 on the front title Page. Antoine Masson (1636 -- 1700) was a French painter and a line engraver, born at Loury, near Orléans. "Art Union : A Monthly Journal of the Fine Arts" posted this artwork and an accompanying description in an 1878 issue of the magazine. This steel engraving was made in 1885 by an anonymous engraver. Actual artwork surface is 7 inches by 6 inches, on a piece of thick, white, museum-quality, board paper that is 15 inches by 11 inches (Imperial Quarto). This sharp print was produced in 1885. Below the 7" x 6" artwork, there is the name of Rembrandt, Masson, the title, and the publishing company. The back side of the page is blank white. The white margins of the 15x11 paper have light foxing. This print could be mounted and framed beautifully by the buyer (see pics). Artwork, itself, is very clean and sharp. Print is 140 years old and has never been mounted on a wall.
