Opened for business in 1958, it quickly became a landmark on the Central Coast of California. It is noted for its unique decor, pink dining room, and themed rooms. It was created by Alex Madonna, a successful construction magnate and entrepreneur (d. April 2004), and his wife Phyllis. The inn includes a restaurant and bakery, and is located on the west side of US Route 101 and situated on the lower eastern portion of Cerro San Luis Obispo. The property is adorned with a pseudo-Swiss-Alps exterior and lavish common rooms accented by pink roses, Western murals, and hammered copper. The predominant exterior color is pink, which extends to the lamp posts and trash cans. Each of the 110 guest rooms and suites is uniquely designed and themed, though some tourists stop just to peek at the famous rock waterfall urinal located in the men's restroom, a feature designed by Hollywood set designer Harvey Allen Warren. Hanna-Barbera Productions sued the Madonna Inn in 1983, alleging copyright infringement over the Inn's "Flintstone Room" (#139) and its decorations, which included images of Fred and Wilma Flintstone and the exclamation "Yabba Dabba Doo". Room #139 is now the "Jungle Rock" junior suite. According to a 2013 interview with Clint Pearce, president of Madonna Enterprises, the "Caveman Room" (#137) was originally the "Flintstone Room". Phyllis Madonna might have been an untrained interior decorator, but her unique tastes and vision were a success, and a decisive factor in the hotel's longevity. Founder Alex Madonna supposedly designed the first sketches of the hotel on a napkin. While he was in charge of the layout, he gave decorating duties to his wife, Phyllis. She later recalled: Alex said, "You just take care of decorating all the rooms." I said, "I've never done anything like this." He said, "You can do it." I didn't want to disappoint my husband, so I just took the bull by the horns and jumped in. Perhaps because of its larger-than-life scope and luxuriant excesses, celebrities have long been drawn to the Madonna Inn, either as overnight guests or diners at one of the onsite eateries. The roster of famous people who have visited the inn includes Clint Eastwood, Sam Elliott, Dustin Hoffman, Bette Midler, Dolly Parton, John Wayne, Paul Newman, George Burns, Steve Martin, and Lucille Ball. Macaulay Culkin once stayed in the Old-Fashioned Honeymoon room, Debbie Harry in the Country Gentleman room, and Michael Dukakis in the Romance room. The Madonna Inn has been a filming hot spot for numerous movies, television shows, and music videos over the years. The art-house movie Aria was shot there. Reality shows like The Bachelor, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and Little People, Big World have all filmed on the premises.
