Description: Excellent condition or better. PASSION AND GUILT An outcast on his Caribbean island, handsome Paul Hekke was obsessed by the desire to "belong." Haunted by shame and guilt, he toyed first with the erotic rites of witchcraft-then with a casual succession of passionate women. But not until his savage need drove him to the brink of violence, did Paul find a strange and unexpected relief- from the tormented emotions and unleashed passions of the tropics. "Mrs. Van Saher, a student of medicine, was chiefly concerned in her first novel, THE ECHO, with a psychiatric technique for plumbing the human soul. Now in MACAMBA, though this book also concerns the soul's sickness, she has made her case history subservient to the story, and in so doing she goes a long step forward as a writer of fiction." But before telling his story I should like to say something about the history of Curaçao. The islands were originally inhabited by the Indians. They were discovered in 1499 by the Spaniard, Alonso de Ojeda. The Spanish implanted the Catholic religion and later brought in Africans as slaves. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, the Dutch took possession of Curaçao and Dutch traders and settlers established themselves on the islands. In the middle of the same century, a group of Portuguese Jews, expelled from Brazil and Spanish colonies, also came to the West Indies. They were the nucleus of a small but powerful group of wealthy bankers and traders who became the backbone of Curaçao's economy. The population of Curaçao, composed of Indians whose blood is often mixed with that of former slaves, Dutch set- tlers, and these Spanish-Portuguese Jews, nowadays all speak Papiamento, a curious-sounding language basically Spanish and Portuguese which was originally spoken by the slaves. Although Papiamento, which now includes many Dutch and English words, is spoken daily in the home, in business and social life, Dutch is the official and prescribed language in the schools and the civil administration. Originally the landskinderen-those born in Curaçao of native stock-called all white men Macambas. Later, how- ever, the term was used only to describe those transients who did not speak Papiamento and who lived off the island with- out adapting themselves to its customs. The term "Macamba" thus came into general use as a derogatory term. Nowadays it is used sometimes jokingly, sometimes bitterly, to describe anyone who is not a native of Curaçao. ----------- 6 ----------- "Children begin by loving their parents; as they grow older they judge them; Some- times they forgive them." -OSCAR WILDE "With God, and in Curaçao, everything is Possible." -A CURAÇAO PROVERB ----------- 6 ----------- WOMEN WERE HIS PREY Women yielded naturally to reck- less and hand- some Paul Hekke, whose name had been linked with every easy girl in the Caribbean. Norma, the tantalizing native beauty Mady, who looked innocent, but had no morals Mercedes his own father's faithless mistress.. POPULA EAGLE BOOKS LIBRARY But none of them satisfied Paul. Until the night he met the white girl who had everything to give- and was afraid to give it. "A heritage of shame and despair is a fearful burden anywhere. 'Macamba' presents the problem with native color and an arresting knowledge of the chosen background." SATURDAY REVIEW
