No. 42. Reply of Messrs. Agenor de Gasparin, Edouard Laboulaye, Henri Martin, Augustin Cochin, to the Loyal National League of New York. April 1864 You can find a downloadable copy on the internet, if you want. If, on the other hand, you want to OWN an original, this is the ONLY copy for sale on the internet. It is a dialogue between four thoughtful (loyal) Americans and counterparts in Europe commenting upon the limits of the Constitution on the powers Lincoln does not have to END slavery during the conflict. >>> I acquired this document (along with many others) from the widow of a senior Editor at the Smithsonian Institution. As a retirement career, I worked as a Home Improvement Contractor, (The House Doctor) for, as my mother used to say, “a string of widows” who needed odd job help. Every Tuesday for several months I would visit Mrs. Lea and run upstairs to the attic, or downstairs to the basement, and collect for “sorting” whatever was on her mind for the day. We would sort things into piles: (1) Pack for moving to Vermont where she planned to move to her daughter’s home; (2) Deliver to Good Will, or (3) Trash. Sometimes I was allowed to interdict the Good Will stream-- if I so wished, as compensation for my time, and often Mrs. Lea would bypass that step and simply ask me if I wanted “it”. [For example a whitewashed piano leg which made a splendid base for an end table.] As I mentioned, Mr. Lea had been a senior editor at the Smithsonian Institution and he had saved a LOT of papers. Mrs. Lea knew (because I told her) that I had been a Vice President at the Smithsonian (SSIE), before I retired to become a part time handyman. She was happy for me to keep Mr. Lea’s document cache. I have passed along (a) Mr. Lea’s important records of Smithsonian Expeditions – to Barry Lawrence Ruderman, (b) Mr. Lea’s hand painted bird pictures to a birdwatcher friend in England and (c) I just sold on eBay photos of a Civil War hanging he had. Here, I am continuing listing his fragments of Civil War history. This particular document is a “educated” exchange of views between four loyal Americans and a skeptical Frenchman concerning why/how the US constitution bound Abraham Lincoln’s options re slavery & emancipation. This document is a whole and complete! And, as far as I can tell, although several museums have a copy, including some from which you can download a legible image. If you want an original, genuine antique copy, THIS is your only current option. So, here is your opportunity to get an original, antique report on this singular issue in the Civil War: slavery.- a copy once owned by a noted Smithsonian Editor and student of the civil war. Please help me find a good home for this little treasure. And in so doing, help me to provide mortgage assistance to four families whose breadwinners used to work for my wife and me, before we retired and who lost income due to Covid. My wife and I are allocating ALL of our eBay proceeds to help BD, BR, GD & LT. Thank you for reading this.
