First, it provides some glimpses into the career of his grandfather as Railway Postal Clerk during the waning years of the 19th century and the dawn of the 20th. Then, it covers several years of the career of the author's father during the heyday of the electric railway industry. The bulk of the narrative, however, is a series of reminiscences of the author's railroad experiences from the mid-1930s through the year 1945, interwoven with bits of the industry's history. He admits that he was "bitten by the railroad bug" at any early age, even earlier than he can remember. During his boyhood years, he saw the railroads slowly stir from the doldrums of the Great Depression and then transport unprecedented volumes of traffic during the momentous years of World War II. Meanwhile, within the industry a revolution was occurring, hardly perceptible at first, as Diesel-electric power began to challenge steam. The author recalls his observations of these events as his knowledge of and enthusiasm for railroading developed. From his hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee, dominated by lines of the southern Railway System, his horizons broadened to include other areas of the Southeastern United States. Some of the descriptions are of places and events well-known to railroad enthusiasts, others of locations and occurrences lesser known and in some cases even obscure. Separate chapters are devoted to the railroads of Raleigh, North Carolina, and the Birmingham, Alabama, area. The narrative also explores some construction projects commenced but never completed, as well as a few envisioned but never even begun.
