In part: "The undersigned elects to and does hereby exercise the option...of extending the term of your employment for an additional period, commencing on or before October 16, 1926, and continuing thereafter for the period necessary to enable us to complete the photographing of the role to be portrayed by you during the said first extended period. During said first extended period you will render services for us in the portrayal of a role to be selected by us in a Western photoplay to be selected by us...the compensation to be paid to you during said first extended period shall be Three Hundred Dollars ($300.00) per week." Col. T.J. McCoy was TIM McCOY (1891-1978), one of the great stars of early Westerns. In 1922, Colonel Tim McCoy, former Adjutant General of Wyoming and a territorial Indian agent, was asked by the head of Famous Players-Lasky, Jesse Lasky, to provide Indian extras for the Western extravaganza, The Covered Wagon. He brought hundreds of Indians to Hollywood and served as technical advisor on the film. After touring the country and Europe with the Indians as publicity, McCoy returned to Hollywood and used his connections to obtain further work in the movies, both as a technical advisor and as an actor. MGM speedily signed him to a contract to star in a series of Westerns and McCoy rapidly rose to stardom, making scores of Westerns and occasional non-Westerns. The Thundering Herd (1925) was his first film and the only one that lists him as "Col. T.J. McCoy". The "Western photoplay" mentioned by Mayer which was selected by MGM was McCoy's second film, War Paint (1926), where he was listed in the credits as "Tim McCoy".
