Lot of 12 Issues Louisiana Historical Quarterly 1917-1927 Fascinating Content

Description: Up for sale is a lot of twelve (12) issues of The Louisiana Historical Quarterly, all published between 1917 and 1927. These issues contain many fascinating articles about the history of the Pelican State. (NOTE: As a quarterly, there would have been 4 issues per year. I am only selling 12 issues that were published during the 11 year period from 1917 to 1927, inclusive.) Each issue is a softcover (paperback) book measuring about 10.25 inches tall by about 7 inches wide. Here is a list of the 12 issues in the lot. For each, I have taken the liberty to highlight what seemed to me to be the most interesting content. (NOTE: For the complete contents of each issue, see photos # 7 through 18 of this listing.) 1. Volume 1, Number 2 (September 14, 1917), 166 pages: Contains an article about Lafayette's visit to New Orleans during his triumphant return to the US in the 1820s. Also includes a long article defending the reputation of General James Wilkinson (written by a direct descendant), who had been accused of treason by collaborating with the Spanish (and also with Aaron Burr). 2. Volume 4, Number 3 (July, 1921), pages 255 to 418: Includes an article about Louisiana's Confederate Military Records by the state Commissioner on Military Records. Within this article is a comprehensive list of 980 organized military companies in Louisiana and an index to all of the military engagements and campaigns fought within state limits during the Civil War 3. Volume 5, Number 1 (January, 1922), 119 pages: Includes several interesting articles including the proceedings of a 1764 legal case brought by the Capuchin brothers of New Orleans for monetary damages caused by injuries to one of their slaves who had been attacked by a white man. 4. Volume 5, Number 3 (July, 1922), pages 287 - 446: Includes a history of the extremely controversial and contested New Orleans municipal election of 1858, which led rioting and other conflict. 5. Volume 6, Number 1 (January, 1923), 173 pages: Includes the (first portion of a) memoir by Frank L. Richardson of his service during the Civil War. 6. Volume 6, Number 4 (October, 1923), pages 543 to 714: Includes the full (translated) proceedings of the sensational 1780 murder trial of Mary Glass, a free woman of color (quadroon) who was accused of mutilating and then killing her female servant, a 12 year old white orphan. 7. Volume 8, Number 2 (April, 1925), pages 193 to 335: Includes several interesting articles including the lead article on the activities of Spanish-American patriots who thwarted the plans of the Spanish (and of Napoleon) to further their own interests in the Rio Grande Valley during the early 1800s. 8. Volume 8, Number 4 (October, 1925), pages 549 to 741: Includes the New York Times obituary for the just deceased George W. Cable, a famous Creole author from New Orleans whose advocacy for African Americans during Reconstruction resulted in his being ostracized by Creole society, causing him to relocate to New England for the remaining years of his life. Also includes a "nuanced" commentary on Cable's career by the editor of the Quarterly. 9. Volume 9, Number 1 (January, 1926), 175 pages: The entire issue is entitled "Battle of New Orleans Number" and contains several articles on the famous battle of 1815. 10. Volume 9, Number 2 (April, 1926), pages 181 to 356. Contains another article about Lafayette's visit to New Orleans and articles about the celebration of the centennial of that event. Also contains an interesting discussion of the conflicts between Andrew Jackson and the Louisiana legislature during the lead up to the Battle of New Orleans. 11. Volume 9, Number 3 (July, 1926), pages 361 to 560. Contains a complete inventory of the estate of Jean Baptiste Prevost, including the valuation of his numerous slaves. 12. Volume 10, Number 1 (January, 1927), 155 pages. Contains two articles about the origins of Louisiana's distinctive notarial (notary public) system. Also contains a long interesting article on Henry Miller Shreve, founder of Shreveport, with emphasis on his pioneering work as a river boat captain. Please see above for full description of condition and photos. NOTE: There are some very significant condition issues. Sold as is.
