Built by Montreal Locomotive Works for the Canadian National Railway in 1930. the 4-6-4 Class K-5-a Hudson locomotive played a pivotal role in Canadian rail history. Averaging 65 miles per hour along the Toronto - Montreal corridor, it kept its schedule over 90 percent of the time, earning it the name Speed Queen. Of the five beautifully designed locomotives numbered 5700 through 5704, only two remain today: the 5700 and 5702. Sadly, the others were destroyed. To honour the classic locomotives that helped build this great land, the President's Choice team has been developing high quality HO scale train sets for serious collectors and hobbyists since the early 1990s. Specially commissioned to commemorate the production of the 10th PC train, this limited edition set features a faithful reproduction of the vintage Hudson, complete with a real smoke generator. To add to the authenticity, we've numbered it 5702 and have equipped it with the 02's unique feature: elephant ears smoke lifters. Not only were these lifters visually appealing, they also proved to be a valuable technological advancement, as they cut through the air and lifted the smoke away from the locomotive and the cars. To help highlight this important milestone in the history of the PC train, we've replaced our customary historical markings on the 5 freight cars and the caboose with detailed illustrations of our playful PC Mini Chefs characters. CUSTOM LOCOMOTIVE AND ROLLING STOCK FEATURED ON BACK PANEL. In days gone by, the legendary steam locomotives were the glorious haulers of precious freight and cargo. They journeyed from coast to coast, thundering across the mountains and valleys of this great nation, transporting everything from minerals to passengers. With their great power and ground-breaking speeds, they bore such memorable names as the Bullet Nosed Betty, the Pacific and the Mountain Express. In the shadow of these splendid transcontinental locomotives, were the unsung heroes of the rail industry: the Switcher locomotives. Although the high-speed steam locomotives could deliver their cargo in record time, they were inefficient in short distance deliveries to final destinations or precision redirecting. With blossoming industrialization and the advent of large freight yards, a growing need developed for the efficient "switching" or "shifting" of large blocks of freight cars. This is where the 0-8-0, affectionately named the Yard Bull came in. This behind-the-scenes behemoth, with its incredible traction and slower speed, could deliver the perfect combination of precision and brute force that was needed to accomplish this daunting task. There were no long, magnificent cross-Canada trips for the humble switcher locomotive, but in a world where high speed seemed to be the ultimate goal, strength and precision were still needed and the Yard Bull was there to fulfill its duty. The switcher locomotives were divided into two sub-classes: the P-5-e, manufactured by Baldwin in 1927 and the P-5-d manufactured by Canadian National in 1927 and in 1928 (numbered 8330-8339). The one we have replicated, the 8333, was undoubtedly, like its numerous counterparts, put to work as soon as it hit the rails and continued to toil well into the 1950s or until the very end of the steam era. Though the Yard Bull may have lead an existence founded on hard work with no glory, we are proud to commemorate its invaluable contribution to the success of Canadian rail transportation.
