"Lorna Doone" Vols 1 & 2-Blackmore-1882-1902 Inscript-50+ Illustrs-Coates Phila

Description: Offered is this antique complete-in- two-volumes set of books, "Lorna Doone-A Romance of Exmoor", written by R. D. Blackmore and published in Philadelphia by Henry T. Coates & Co. This is the 20th edition of the classic novel, with the preface dated 1882. There is a gift inscription inside the front cover of volume 1 dated Christmas, 1902. There are 24 black and white illustrations in volume 1, all present, and 27 additional black and white illustrations in volume 2, all present except for the frontispiece; many are of places in the book. Each book is approx. 8" x 5 1/2". Volume 1 contains 510 pages (there should be 516) and volume 2 contains 565 pages. Both are in fair condition. The hard red covers with ornate gold front designs have only light wear, the gold designs still partially shiny. The gold words and designs on the spines are partially faded but still visible. There is cracking inside both the front and back covers of both volumes. The white endpapers have considerable wear, have yellowed and have some soiling. There is a small hole in the back endpaper of volume 2, with the front endpaper missing. There is a gift inscription from Christmas, 1902 inside the front cover of volume 1, as already mentioned. In addition to the last six pages of volume 1 being missing, all the pages prior to "List of Illustrations" is missing from the front of volume 2, including the title page and frontispiece, the only missing illustration in the set. Most of the pages are well-attached to the binding; a few are loose. Almost all are intact, but a few have small tears. Almost all the tissue papers adjacent to the illustrations are present; a few have tears but most are intact. The pages have yellowed but are otherwise mostly clean and clear, with some occasional spotting. The gold at the top of the page edges is partially intact. In addition to the gift inscription, there are a few words written within the books but this is not extensive and some red marks at the end of volume 1. I have a lot of experience with vintage and antique books but am not an expert so please let me know if my description is missing information and you have additional questions.
