Description: Born in 1923, Loretta Cain was a prominent New Mexico artist. She painted for nearly 70 years until she became blind. She also owned an art gallery in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1995, Cain moved to Silver City and opened another art gallery. Cain painted in the Impressionist style and used many colors in her works. Her subject matter was often landscapes and scenes of everyday life in New Mexico. While this painting is not signed, it is attributed to the late artist, Loretta Cain. It was found among her estate and painted in her style. It is made of plywood hard board and therefore it is very heavy. This painting is large, measuring 22"x28." This still life picture contains a vase of red and pink flowers. Behind the vase is a large window. The vase must be located on a kitchen or dining table as there is a sugar bowl in front of it. The painterly manner in which the tree outside the window has been painted and the use of color to depict the shadows on the table and the wall in the upper right corner, are very much in keeping with Cain's other works, of which I own many. So, while it can not be confirmed, this work is assumed to be painted by Loretta Cain.
