P. GaubertMechanical music. The Columbia Gala. Incidental music for the Piccoli theatre. The gala organized by Colambia at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées marks a date in the annals of mechanical music. It has not been long since the phonograph was regarded by people of taste as a vile insult, of the most appalling vulgarity. Now, for some years now the tide has turned, and so completely that mechanical music far from arousing laughter or disdain. The art record It ceased to be an emphatic formula, it is indeed a reality, and the Columbia record, for example, was not afraid to confront the general public with a demonstrative and most conclusive session. .It is with the assistance of the eminent artists Mrs. M. Beaujon and Mr. Thill, of the Opera MM. Lucien Fugère and Rogatchewsky, of the Opéra Comique, M. E. Commette, organist of the Primatiale de Lyon, the orchestra of the Société du Conservatoire, under the direction of M. Ph. Gaubert, etc. that this beautiful evening was organized under the patronage of the Phonographic Critique and given for the benefit of old musicians. Mr. Jean Bérard, one of the directors of Columbia, in a substantial and tactful speech, situates the exact role of the disc and refutes, with a beautiful logic, the objections of the ignorant as regards mechanical progress. After the performance of part of the program The Overture to the "King of Ys" by the Conservatory Orchestra, a Concerto, - by Handel and reads Toccata by M. Widor; where Mr. Commette takes the organ part Mr. Lucien Fugère, the great artist, long acclaimed the spectators attended the recording of the duet of Lohengrin, sung by Mr. Beaujon and Mr. Thill. 1.It was not the only instructive side of the evening a cinematographic film, musical adaptation of the discs, by Mr. Szyfer, the remarkable conductor of the Opera, made known to us the "birth of a disc" since its confection in soft wax until his departure for distant lands. Finally, an emotion seized the listeners when we heard the doyen of French pianists, Francis Planté, whose records recorded at Saint-Avit, fixed in time and space the immortal works of Chopin, Schumann and Mendelssohn. What a valuable lesson for us, such a session! Moving, subtle art will find itself concretized, materialized, “now resting under the shelter of death”, according to the happy expression of the master Maeterlinck. With such thrilling and lively inventions, it would have been given to us to know, other than by hearsay, the elements of the vocal prestige of an Adolphe Nourrit, a famagno, a Talma. or again the magnificent playing of a Liszt, a Htibinstcin, and the thousand shades of movement in music, this dynamic life diffused everywhere. Today, with these new inventions, new perspectives are opening up on the ocean of sound, and how to remain deaf to the call of the modern sirens hidden under the membrane of discs "heavy with spiritual secrets that a child of three-year-old can fit in his little hands. Georges Thill (14 December 1897 – 17 October 1984) was a French opera singer, often considered to be his country's greatest lyric-dramatic tenor. Born in Paris, his career lasted from 1924 to 1953, peaking during the 1930s. A pupil of the Neapolitan tenor Fernando De Lucia (1860-1925), Thill made his opera debut at the Paris Opéra in 1924, and continued to perform there and at the Opéra-Comique for several decades. He also sang throughout Europe and in South American, proving highly successful at La Scala, the Rome Opera, the Verona Arena, the Vienna State Opera, the Teatro Colón and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He sang 14 performances of seven roles over two seasons (1931-1932) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, but he had difficulty settling in and was less well received by American audiences. Thill made many 78-rpm discs of French, Italian and German operatic arias and recorded a complete performance of Massenet's Werther for French Columbia in 1931. The best of them display the gleaming tone of his voice in its prime, as well as demonstrating his exemplary taste. Thill also appeared in several French films.
