The Visual Literary Resource I contains reading & writing transparencies. While, The Visual Literary Resource II contains fine art transparencies.Based on the idea that visual images are a language, visual literacy can be defined as the ability to understand and produce visual messages. Work in the field has centered on development of educational programsnthat teach students to evaluate and create messages, as well as improve students' reading and writing skills through the use of visual literacy techniques.Visual Literacy as a field of research, study, and teaching becomes increasingly important with the ever-expanding proliferation of mass media in society. As more information and entertainment is acquired through non-print media (such as television and the internet), the ability to think critically and visually about the images presented becomes a crucial skill.Researchers have found that young people learn more than half of what they know from visual information, thus demonstrating a need for an explicit curriculum to show students how to think critically about visual data. In a society where the media employ visual data to persuade, students must learn how to look beyond the surface to understand deeper levels of meaning and tactics employed to sway their thinking. Fine Art Transparencies. The included transparencies are full-page, four-color reproductions of the fine art in the textbook. The fine art strand in the Visual Literacy Resource II teaches students visual literacy skills and art appreciation, based on the National Standards for Arts Education developed by the Consortium of National Arts Education Associations. The lessons are self-contained and require no special knowledge of art by the teacher or student. Concepts of analysis and criticism will be introduced at every level. Each grade will focus on a particular goal: 8th Grade - Oak Level - Responding to Literature -- Viewing critically and expressing judgements Accompanying blackline master pages expand in the Art Smart feature presented in the Pupil's Edition of the textbook and provide the student with information and questions pertaining to each transparency. The About the Artist section gives biographical information about the artist and insight into the artist's methods and motivations. About the Art discusses the artwork, focusing on specific aspects, such as composition, subject matter, and style. These are followed by Critical Viewing questions that may be used for class discussion or writing assignments, with either short answer or longer essay responses. A final writing prompt allows the student to connect the art to a selection or theme in the literature. Answer Key.
