Description: Limoges LDB&Co Flambeau Plate Strawberries 9 1/4" Charger Hand Painted 1891-1910 An Elegant Decorative 9 1/4" CABINET PLATE from Limoges, France, Realistic STRAWBERRIES w/Gold Rim, Scalloped Rim w/GOLD SCROLLWORK, Decorated by a Talented Artist, L.D.B. &Co. (Flambeau China) circa 1891-early 1900's DESCRIPTION: The beautiful hand painted deep plate with no verge was decorated by a talented artist. The color palette used is red, green and grey on white w/gold. There are grey ghost leaves & vines to give depth to the painting. An interesting touch is the beautiful single white bloom in the center medallion that has white highlights in the petals. There are gold scrolls painted towards the center of the plate from each scallop of the rim. This is such a realistic painting of the strawberries and was obviously meant to be displayed as a cabinet plate. CONDITION: While this plate is classified as used, its condition is superb. We can find no defects or damage. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. It is clean & white on the back. The gold around the rim shows no wear. DIMENSIONS: This plate has a diameter of 9 1/4" with a height of 1 1/8". HISTORY/MARKS: The period of operation for this Flambeau China porcelain white ware manufacturer and decorating workshop in Limoges, France was 1896-1916. L.D.B. & Co. was apparently a New York importing company with ties to both Limoges, France and Bavaria. Most Flambeau China marks carry the L.D. B. & Co. initials as part of the mark. The quality of painting by Flambeau was quite high and many of the famous Limoges artists’ signatures such as Rene’, Dubois, Luc, Levy or Andre’ can be found on their wares. No examples have been found decorated by American artists (Mary Frank Gaston’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition). The green overglaze decorator's mark on this charger is that of Flambeau China (L.D.B. & Co.) which is Gaston's mark #3 used in the 1890's-1900's time period. There is also the green underglaze unidentified Limoges manufacturer's mark #6 used 1891+ as identified by Gaston. So the circa for this piece is 1891-early 1900's.
