This is the earliest version of this biography, published while Garfield was still alive attempting to recover from the assassination attempt. The book includes his early life as a student and teacher and then President of Hiram College, and spends a considerable portion on his military career in the Civil War, during which he was promoted from Colonel to Brigadier General. After the war he was elected to the Congress and Senate several times before being elected president in 1880. The book is illustrated with fifteen full page illustrations as well as three full page battlefield maps to help visually describe some of the scenes described in the book. Later versions of this book cut some of the Civil War history and add more about his assassination and burial. This book was sold by subscription only, this copy having been delivered to its recipient on September, 10th, 1881 at a cost of two dollars, according to the penned information on the front flyleaf.
