Description: I recently bought a small group of 16 different Life magazines at an Estate sale. I don't know the connection between the elderly women who's daughter I bought these from and the man who had the subscription originally and who's name appears on each mailing label but in researching his name I found he was a World War II War hero named Colonel Kenji Hino and as of late 2011 he was still alive! Here's who he is/was and I even found a photo online! This is the caption to the photo. Kenji Hino, a Japanese-American veteran of the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442 Regimental Combat Team, along with veterans from the Military Intelligence Service, United States Army, await a ceremony in which they received the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of dedicated service during World War II on November 2, 2011 in Washington, DC. About 19,000 veterans were awarded the honor, which is Congress' highest civilian medal. Here's a copy of his online obituary: Kenji Hino Army colonel Kenji Hino, 97, a decorated Army colonel and veteran of three wars, died March 30 at his home in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The cause was arteriosclerotic heart disease, said a daughter, Christina Hino. Col. Hino, the son of Japanese immigrants, joined the ROTC as a college undergraduate and initially served in the Army from 1938 to 1942. He rose to the rank of second lieutenant but was forced to resign his commission soon after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, his family said. In 1943, he was able to reenlist, at the rank of private, in the Army’s 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a unit almost entirely made up of soldiers of Japanese descent. They served in France and Italy and were among the most heavily decorated units of the American forces during the war. The then-private, who served in the infantry, received a battlefield commission near the end of the war, elevating his rank to second lieutenant. He spent the majority of his career in the Army Signal Corps and was a veteran of the wars in Korea and Vietnam. He retired from active duty in 1971, then spent seven years as a telecommunications executive with the government contractor TAI. He moved from Falls Church to California in 2003. Kenji Hino was a Chicago native and a 1938 electrical engineering graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1951 and also graduated from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., among other military training schools. His decorations included three awards of the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart and the Army Commendation Medal. In 2011, he was among the surviving veterans of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team who received the Congressional Gold Medal — one of the highest civilian awards — for their wartime service. His wife, Elsbeth Meyer, whom he married in 1947, died in 1973. Survivors include five children, Peter Hino of Seaside Heights, N.J., Henry Hino of Richland Center, Wis., Elsbeth Hino of Wellfleet, Mass., and Matsu Sklarenko and Christina Hino, both of San Luis Obispo; and seven grandchildren. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ While there's only a few of these magazines in this group, they seem to be significant issues from 1961-1974 with the subject matter such as John F. Kennedy, Civil Rights related, Moon Landing and Vietnam. All issues have Col. Hino's mailing address label on them except the final one in the batch which is the Winter 1975 "The year in pictures" & that covers everything in 1974. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There's typically less than a dozen of this particular issue for sale on eBay at any one time. Most are in "Acceptable" condition which is kinda beat up and have missing pages, split bindings, tears, underlining and folds. This one is in very good condition. COMPLETE Original magazine! Nice, readable condition. Covers may show some soiling or wear. Mailing label on front. A nicer than average copy! Some wear on covers is typical. This vintage magazine has tons of great ads that can be used for projects, framing, or to give as a gift to reminisce. Life Magazines make unique gifts for Birthdays, Anniversaries or other special events. Another excellent use is for a coffee table showpiece or in waiting rooms. Definitely they are informative and great conversation pieces! Life Magazine focused on a very specific time frame with the current news of the day. Give someone (or yourself) something unique that will show or remind them what was happening in the world during that time long ago!
