Description: The base value of the 1880 Gold Piece gives this buckle a starting point of value. We're hoping though, to find a buyer who appreciates the craftsmanship of the buckle instead of just it's karat weight in gold. Measuring exactly 3" x 2" this buckle, according to the estate, was passed from generation to generation making it anywhere from 70-120 years old. We are going to rely on the collectors here at eBay to estimate date of creation. We also aren't sure of total 14K content. The total weight of the buckle is 112 grams. We 'think' the buckle is 14K and plated with an undetermined amount of silver as a means of adhering the 'steel' belt hoops. We think the hoops are steel but could be silver. If one looks at the three stamps on the buckle-back, they appear to reveal gold not far beneath the silver layer. We 'ARE' curtain the 'circuitous rope' on the face and other decorative relief are 14K gold, but barring smelting, can't determine % of gold vs silver on the 3" x 2" buckle base. There are many grams of 14K gold in the belt buckle itself, but quantification of such would need to wait until it was separated from the coin and purified. The initials 'T. N. L.' appear of the buckle-face opposite the $20 Gold Piece. Three separate jewelers have offered that for about $100 the initials 'T. N. L.' could be polished out and new monograms etched within. We did want to mention that the coin itself is in very, very good condition. A very knowledgeable numismatist acquaintance offered that the coin is conservatively worth $3800-$4500 by itself with a huge potential upside were it to be graded. For example: much of the relief (EG: The 'B' in 'Liberty') is much more defined than other similar coins that have sold well above the average comparative sale.
