Description: Constructed in 1917 and operating until 1980, West Virginia was home to the first Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company factory. The factory operated grew to become a central part of the economy in the Kanawha Valley region of Charleston for over six decades. The company produced everything from glass jars to the sheet glass used in the windows of the Empire State Building in New York City. Presented are two mechanical pencils previously owned and used by a very hard-working person at the factory in Charleston.West Virginia was once among the world's chief exporters of glass. There were more than 400 factories in the state through the 20th century. Sadly, only a handful of manufacturers remain.
