"The patterns of all four Lenox state services are represented in the design created for The American Commemorative Bowl, crafted of Lenox fine china and issued to mark 80 years of Lenox at the White House. In 1918, President and Mrs. Wilson had the satisfaction of ordering - from Lenox - the first completely American-made state dinner service. And Lenox had both the honor and the privilege of beginning an association with the White House that continues to this day. Indeed, the 1,700 piece service commissioned by President Wilson was the first of four state services created by Lenox for use at the White House. Lenox is the only United States manufacturer of fine china to hold this distinction. All four of these state services have been made of Lenox find china, distinguished by its rich but delicate lustrous ivory tone. And each service has been designed by the artists of Lenox, working closely with the President and First Lady. The Wilson service of 1918 is decorated with an outer border of gold stars and stripes, separated from an inner gold-encrusted border by a tinted band of a deeper ivory. On the service plate, the pattern features a wide blue band that separates the gold borders. The Roosevelt service, 1,722 pieces in all, arrived at the White House in January 1935, in time for the annual state dinner given for the heads of foreign embassies. The plates were encircled by a narrow, navy blue border with gold stars and an inside border design of roses and feathers in gold. This was the state china until 1953, when President and Mrs. Truman ordered a 1,932 piece set of Lenox china. Created to match the newly decorated State Dining Room, the china was trimmed with 24 karat etched gold and celadon green. This service is also the first to use the presidential seal, redesigned by Executive Order of President Truman, with the eagle facing toward the olive branch, instead of the arrows, in its talons. The fourth Lenox state service was created in 1983 for President Ronald Reagan. This 4,372 piece service was designed in close collaboration with Mrs. Reagan, who selected the final shade of scarlet red as a bright accent to the State Dining Room - and because of her fondness for the color." "The American Commemorative Bowl has been exclusively created for the Lenox Millennium Collection. The bowl is strictly limited to 1,000 copies."
