Description: "Law Judges Wigs" from Thomas Lanseer's MONKEYANA 1827Antique Hand Colored EtchingThe etchings depict monkeys in human clothing for the Monkeyana, or, Men in Miniature (1827) series, and were dedicated in 1832 to the Zoological Society. Landseer was taught artistic techniques by his father and began etching at aged 14. Publisher: Moon, Boys & Graves (London) 1828, etching on chine colléLast picture shown is the back and has a description that the hand coloring was done by G. Townsend 2-4-1919I purchased this and several others from the series from the quaint and famed Cheshire Inn Clayton, MO (St. Louis) when it was fully remodeled. The others are also for sale. There is foxing on the paper but the pressed etching looks good with very minimal foxing (if any) ... matting the etching can cover the foxing. For full info on this print see this link: http://www.luederhniemeyer.com/prints/14380_e.phpThomas Landseer:· Origin: England, Born: 1795, London, EnglandDied: January 20, 1880, London, England· Thomas Landseer was a member of the famous Landseer family of artists from Great Britain. His father John Landseer was an eminent engraver and painter, and his younger brother Sir Edwin became one of the most popular painters of the 19th century; Thomas's other brother Charles, as well as his four sisters, Jane, Anna Maria, Jessica and Emma Landseer MacKenzie, were also artists.· A talented engraver, Thomas collaborated with Edwin from childhood, as the younger brother preferred drawing and painting. Thomas would go on to dedicate much of his career to engraving his brother's most famous paintings. In total, Thomas copied over 125 of Edwin's works.· Having studied under Benjamin Robert Haydon, Landseer also produced many original etchings beyond his work for his brother. In 1827, he created a book parodying human folly called Monkeyana, or Men in Miniature. He also published Characteristic Sketches of Animals in 1832 and The Natural History of Birds in 1836.· Landseer was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA) in Britain in 1868. He died in 1880 in London. Please see all pictures for condition before biddingAll sales are final/no refundsMessage with any questions, please Buy with Confidence ...
