Late Civil War Early Indian Wars Cavalry Cartridge Box

Description: Here is an interesting Civil War cavalry carbine cartridge box. Earlier Civil War cartridge boxes utilized roller buckles on the bottom of the box to accommodate a leather shoulder sling. A late war box was developed (C.1864-1865) that omitted these buckles, and according to Stephen Dorsey's excellent book "Indian Wars Cartridge Pouches, Boxes, and Carbine Boots" (page 16), this box saw service in the early Indian War period until the new pattern Dyer pouches supplanted the old stock Civil War models. This example has had the inner flap cut and 80% removed for easier access to the cartridges. This could have been done on the western frontier, or possibly on the surplus market (or potentially during the war). No markings can be found on the box (likely on the portion that was removed). The box remains in good condition, showing signs of age, use, and wear. The leather shows signs of drying, cracking and general age associated with Civil War leather. The latch tab has a portion missing where the finial would have pushed through the end of the tab. The belt loops are intact, but shows signs of stress and having actually been on a belt.
