Description: A rare late 18th century framed embroidered wool on linen needlework of a floral motif collected in an abstracted wicker basket on a neutral ground from an unknown artist Boston School dyed wool on buff colored linen acquired from a private collection lower Maine, circa 1780-1800 Embroidery pieces such as these were often sewn by older girls and displayed in the family home to impress potential suiters with their sowing skillsThey were also a status symbol as it signaled that the family could afford to send their daughter(s) to a finishing school or academy This piece appears to be unsigned Finely detailed with vibrant colors in an old rosewood veneered and gilded frame (possible original) held in place with hand wrought nails A very rare American Federal period example of fine embroidery The stretched needlework is in very good condition with no losses, rips, runs, or tears The colors are still overall bright and vibrant with some fading to the olive-green color The frame has no obvious imperfections other than some very minor scratches that are only really noticeable in strong raking light and other very minor wear typical with age The back of the frame still retains its old paper backing It has however been ripped and punctured in several spots and is brittle but still fairly stable (not crumbling) and has been left as is (please see photos) We lifted it slightly to photograph the nails (note: we did not remove the needlework from the frame) An excellent example of early American needlework It measures Frame: 14" tall by 15 1/2" wide by 1" deepNeedlework is 10" by 12" Typical wear and imperfections with age *(listing is for item(s) in description onlyNo other display items included) Please have a look at our other listings on Ebay for more great antiques at The Cobbler's Corner SHIPPINGWe generally ship same day after receiving clear payment before 4 pm.
