Description: Large Vintage Sign George H Hunt Potato Chips Braintree Mass Die-Cut Letters. Made of a thick white plexiglass plastic material. Measures 22 1/4" x 48" so it is a large size. I believe this hung in one of the windows at the original building, there are still 2 metal chains at the top used to hang. Has a few small edge chips, no cracks and overall solid & sturdy - see detailed photos. The origin story is that George Hunt obtained a secret recipe for potato chips from a French chef during World War I. Hunt, a former assistant chef at a New Hampshire resort hotel, started making them in his home in 1919 and later his garage. In a 1950 article, the company said it only used less-starchy varieties of potatoes. Starchier varieties hold grease and make the chip too brown, the company explained.A fire in October, 1980 destroyed two-thirds of the company’s plant, injuring five firefighters and destroying some of its equipment. The chips disappeared from store shelves. State corporation records show the company dissolved in October, 1983. The site is now occupied by the 44 Adams Office Park.
