Description: This is a large rare and stunning handmade hardwood West African fertility sculpture/statue. I believe it is Ivory Coast Baule and artisan made for retail sometime post 1960. Given the more free form interpretive expression of the piece, I am not really sure of its origin. Unfortunately it has some major flaws. Splits, cracks and some fading. As I mentioned in the condition description the integrity of the piece is still very much in tact due to the heft of the hardwood and does not really detract from the stunning appeal of the piece. If flaws and patina are not objectionable to you I think this would be a striking addition to your collection or home decor. The evocative nature and expression of the piece is really very unusual and what attracted me to it. If you are an artisan or artist, a worthy project for repair or reconstituted art piece which is what I intended to do with it many years ago. It would give me joy to pass it on to someone else who intended to do the same. The most noticeable split is on the side of one forearm and will only be visible when viewing from that side. If you are inclined to restoration and repair I do believe that crack is workable. The other cracks are long cracks but they are not easily noticeable. One along neck to shoulder on the same side as splitting forearm. Another down the back of head and 2 at the base of sculpture. There is also some fading to the wood especially on face and around the crack on forearm, and a bit of fading throughout the front mid section of the statue. Please refer to photos for detailed display of flaws. Approximate measurements: 30 inches high, 8 inches wide at widest, 7 inches deepest at head.
