It is the most widespread phasmid in the world, can be found throughout tropical Asia and parts of Southeast Asia. They are found in China (mainly southern region), Malaysia, Thailand , Java and Sumatra. A predominantly ground living species found in primary and secondary forested areas. They are prey to lizards, frogs, birds and other insects. They tolerate temperatures within the range 16-27°C and prefer a high humidity of about 70%. Description: Bache-fleshy pink colored insect. Typical Sipyloidea body structure i.e. a short body and very slender legs. Fully functional wings, which are slightly pink. Little eyes, which protrude both sides of the head. Eggs are brown and grey and cylindrical. They are green throughout their life cycle, have pink wings at adulthood and are able to fly. The females are approximately 5–10 cm long and are usually uniformly pale straw-coloured, although very occasionally greenish. As a means of camouflage, they appear like a dry blade of grass. The antennae often reaches two-thirds of the body length and extends beyond the often-outstretched forward front legs. The pink-coloured rear portion of the front wing gives the insect its common name. The female’s posterior wings measure 4.5 cm and enable flight. The males, which are extremely rare, are smaller, being 6-8 cm, and are similarly coloured. When threatened they spray out a chemical which smells a little like skunk but very mild which is located under thorax. The smell is a little similar to the smell of a Lady Bugs pooh, but much stronger. The secretion comes from two oval glands that measure about 1.5 mm in length, situated dorsally and laterally to the gut. The pungent odour has a tinge of musty hay or wet grass. The nymphs can release their legs to distract predators. Capable of asexual reproduction, without fertilisation by the male, females lay approximately 100 eggs two weeks after the last moult. The females glue their torpedo-shaped eggs, about 4mm x 1.5mm, to firm surfaces and in crevices. After about three months, green 18 mm nymphs emerge and mature over four to six months. The wing stubs (with rose veins when adult) appear at the third moult and measure about 5mm. The adults have a life expectancy of approximately six to nine months.
