Description: As a collector of African art you may be missing the good example of a Salampasu mask. This is it. Absolutely classic in every way, it even retains the woven top knots and fishnet cord cowl. Beneath the very heavy brow it has squinty eyes and below them are large puffy cheeks. The nose is stumpy. The balled-up or knotted raffia making its coiffure is stiff and brittle; there are a few minor breaks. The fishnet cowl dangling in back has seen better days but is all there. The riveting feature of this mask is the white-painted mouth showing fiersome sharpened teeth, a practice once integral to the tribal life of these people. The last embellishment is a very skinny twisted real hair (?) beard that emerges from a hole in the chin and hangs about 5" down. Overall, a splendid and uber-typical example. It is 16" tall and 7" wide. If not for the open back it would be a helmet mask. U.S. buyers please. [Boston Primitive]
