Description: Antique German Jugendstil R.Merkelbach Beer Stein #2181 C.Krause c.1905 Description: This very interesting German beer stein was manufactured by Reinhold Merkelbach - the most famous manufacturer of Jugendstil beer steins and other ceramics. The artists who worked for R.Merkelbach included R.Riemerschmid, P.Wynand and other famous designers and art professors of Art Nouveau/Jugendstil era. The stein is designed by Charlotte Krause in early 1900s - she was one of the very few women who worked as Jugendstil designer at this period. The stein is made of stoneware and glazed with "koelnisch braun" glaze - a very special glaze technique used by R.Merkelbach designers. The lid is pewter - the signature Merkelbach lid used exclusively on his brown glaze Jugendstil steins. The stein is in excellent condition. There is some minor issue with one ring of the hinge - the central ring is slightly deformed. (see pic.) but it is fully functional and stable. The stein is marked with "R.Merkelbach Grenzhausen" mark used in early 1900s. The stein is 10.5" tall to the top of the thumblift, 2L capacity.
