LAKE PLACID WINTER OLYMPICS HISTORY & ARTIST WITOLD GORDON LAKE PLACID Lake Placid is a village in the Adirondack Mountains in Essex County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,303. The village of Lake Placid is near the center of the town of North Elba, 50 miles southwest of Plattsburgh. Lake Placid, along with nearby Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake, constitute what is known as the Tri-Lakes region. Lake Placid has risen to international prominence having hosted the 1932 and the 1980 Winter Olympics, the 1972 and 2023 Winter World University Games as well as the 2000 Goodwill Games. Lake Placid hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980. During the 1932 games, the trails outside of the village served for the cross-country skiing events and the cross-country skiing part of the Nordic combined event. Lake Placid, St Moritz, and Innsbruck are the only sites to have twice hosted the Winter Olympic Games. Jack Shea, a resident of the village, became the first person to win two gold medals when he doubled in speed skating at the 1932 Winter Olympics. He carried the Olympic torch through Lake Placid in 2002 shortly before his death. His grandson, Jimmy Shea, competed in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, in his honor, winning gold in the Skeleton. WILTOLD GORDON - ARTIST Witold Gordon was an American artist born in Warsaw, Poland in 1885, and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After finishing his studies, he moved to New York. Gordon worked with American industrial designer Donald Deskey, in the design of Radio City Music Hall where two of his murals are exhibited. Gordon illustrated books, and designed the poster for the Olympic Games in Lake Placid, NY in 1932. In 1939, Gordon created a painting for the New York Worlds' Fair. He traveled throughout the Southern U.S. and produced a series of paintings with the name "American Scene." The series was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in 1941, in New York City. During his travels, Gordon painted in Gouache storefronts and housefronts that he felt exemplified the true face of America. In 1934, he was commissioned by Conde Nast to paint a series of "New York Shops" (New York Shops you Never See) which were published in Vanity Fair Magazine, in July 1934. In 1932 when Georgia O'Keefe accepted the commission to paint a mural in the Ladies' Room in Radio City Music Hall and she abandoned it at the advice of her husband, Alfred Steiglitz who said "Ms. O'Keefe does NOT do bathrooms!" Witold Gordon was given the Radio City commission and he painted two murals for Deskey's masterpiece. Witold Gordon died in 1968.
