Signed by both the author on the title page and also by the craftsman in charge of the binding via a tipped in Certification of First Edition, which states, to wit: "Certification of First Edition - This certifies that this volume of Lafayette in America by Louis Gottschalk was produced as part of the single private printing and binding of this limited first edition, of which two hundred and ninety-four random copies were reserved for presentation by the publisher, L'Esprit de Lafayette Society to the originally selected libraries, museums and United States citizens in the year 1976. It is hand bound in genuine top grain buffalo leather especially tanned by Cromwell from matched hides assembled expressly for this edition; printed on Permanent Archive Text developed solely for this work to exceed the standards of the United States National Historical Publications and Records Commission and to resist deterioration for a minimum of two hundred years, with silk appointments and ornamentation on head, spine and covers in pure 24-karat gold. The six bound-in plates one Woodbine enamel are direct lithographs of the original Revolutionary War maps." Binding of this copy was completed before July 30th, 1976. There are 6 lithographic plates of maps that have been copied from the original documents and have been approved by the United States National Historical Publications and Records Commission. Loosely inserted within the book is the Certificate of First Edition, signed by Richard Poe (in charge of the binding) and dated July 30, 1976.
