He left New York in the ship Flavius on March 24, 1849, and sailed around Cape Horn to San Francisco. Shortly thereafter, [he] visited Stockton, Sacramento, Rough and Ready, Grass Valley, Gold Run, and Downieville. He also participated in the Gold Lake expedition of 1850. Poor health caused him to take a cruise, and after recovering, he stayed in Grass Valley from December 29, 1850, until his departure on April 25, 1852.
