Description: KOLYMA: THE ARCTIC DEATH CAMPS, ROBERT CONQUEST 1st ED PB NF STALIN GULAG This paperback book has not been read. It is in excellent condition. Its spine is untested. I was careful photographing inside pages. Other than the fact that its pages have tanned since 1979 and there is a small amount of edge wear on covers, including some small corner bumps, this book is a gem from an estate sale buyout a book collection. See photos. Kolyma and other Siberian sites were created with the original purpose to mine gold. At first the gold mines were productive with high survival rates depending on workers having warm clothes and food. That changed with the Great Terror of 1937. Fur clothing was banned and the prescribed calorie intake was slashed. People died in droves. Production quotas were raised along with bureaucratic indifference. The result was a version of hell on earth. This is a harrowing history of the work camps above the arctic circle. Written in the late 1970s, it relies heavily upon the testimony of survivors, most notably Varlam Shalamov and Eugenia Ginzburg. Shipped, insured via USPS Priority Mail
