Black Diamond Paul Stanley ~ Guitar, Lead Vocals Gene Simmons ~ Bass, Vocals Ace Frehley ~ Lead Guitar, Vocals Peter Criss ~ Drums, Vocals In the early 1970s, New York City's popular music scene was parallel to that of Liverpool's in the previous decade. Glam rock and glitter rock permeated the rarefied air of the Big Apple's clubs and bars. Bands like the New York Dolls, the Planets, and the Harlets of 42nd Street, with their draq-queen images and high heels, were all the rage. And while these groups had the distinction of being New York's bands-of-the-moment, four young men with greater expectations practiced endlessly in a roach- and rat-infested loft on Manhattan's" lower east side. Bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons and rhythm guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley, fresh from disbanding their group Wicked Lester, envisioned a band unlike any that had ever existed before. Not only would this group play loud, bone-crushing rock 'n' roll sure to obscure the pretensions of its peers, but it would present a phenomenal stage show guaranteed to burn itself into the memory of audiences. After hiring drummer Peter Criss and guitarist Ace Frehley, the newly incarnated KISS spent the next few months enhancing original songs like Strutter and Firehouse with one goal in mind: world domination! Shortly after the self-proclaimed "heavy-metal masters" performed their first concert at Coventry (a now-defunct club in Queens), KISS realized that they needed to take their unique image one step further. The distinct personality of each member naturally—or perhaps supernaturally—manifested itself through black, studded leather and kabuki-style makeup that KISS started wearing on stage. Ace became a lightening-faced spaceman; Peter became a tom cat; Paul became the ultimate rock star; and Gene became a fire-breathing, blood-spitting demon. Each member's alter-ego evolved while KISS polished their performance in clubs throughout the city and suburbs. Audiences quickly caught on, and when KISS returned to Coventry just months after their debut, they experienced sellout success. All of a sudden, KISS was the show to see! When Bill Aucoin, former Flipside director and producer, witnessed KISS onslaught at the Hotel Diplomat in August 1973, he knew the bond had on energy that the notion—the world—had to see. He offered them a cash advance and promised to deliver a record contract in exchange for the opportunity to represent KISS as their manager. Two weeks later, he fulfilled that promise and KISS was signed to former Buddha Records' mogul Neil Bogart's new label, Casablanca Records. In October 1973, KISS worked feverishly with producers Kenny Kerner and Richie Wise to produce their first recorded effort. However, when the self-titled album hit record store shelves on February 18, 1974, it met with enormous criticism. People didn't know what to make of the almost horrific album cover; some critics wrote KISS off as a joke. It was after the band made their debut television appearance, promoting their first single Nothin' to Lose on Dick Clark's In Concert, that critics understood KISS meant business. With their aggressive, thunderock sound and an equally aggressive fury, Riff set out to conquer the world on their first national tour as a supporting act. KISS' first album entered Billboard's Top 100 and, two years after its release, attained Gold status. Containing KISS Klassics such as Cold Gin, Black Diamond, and Deuce. KISS had a timelessness that few albums from its era could match. With no less than six songs from this debut effort still performed live today, that timelessness continues over twenty years later. Here is the album that starred it all. Here is KISS !! Robert V.
