The original double-LP Everybody's In Show-Biz contained a complete studio album (which premiered the all-time Kinks classic "Celluloid Heroes" among other tracks) and a live disc chronicling The Kinks' Carnegie Hall appearance in March 1972. The 2016 edition includes the original album, produced by Raymond Douglas Davis, in its entirety alongside a full disc's worth of previously unissued studio sessions outtakes, recorded for the album in 1972 at Morgan Studios, Willesden, London, and live material, recorded March 2-3, 1972 during The Kinks' triumphant Carnegie Hall concert run.The expanded 3LP edition includes in-depth liner notes penned especially for this release by noted rock scholar David Fricke.A concept album of sorts, Everybody's In Show-Biz drew its themes and inspirations from the trials, tribulations and triumphs of life as a touring musician. USA PRESSED - ORIGINALLY RELEASE Released in 1971, The Kinks' Muswell Hillbillies found the quintessentially British band painting a vivid portrait of working class life in North London, with a sonic palette that drew from turn-of-the-century British music hall and American country styles. Rolling Stone would call it Ray Davies' "signature statement" as a songwriter. This deluxe 2LP edition features the original album paired with a bonus vinyl disc of rarities and outtakes from the original album sessions as well as BBC sessions recorded for John Peel. MUSWELL HILLBILLIES is one of the Kinks' greatest albums (certainly their best album of the seventies). In many ways, this album revisited many of the themes from VILLAGE GREEN--a nostalgic look at a simpler time ("Have a Cuppa Tea"), bemoaning the post-war changes ("Muswell Hillbilly") and fear of the future ("Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues"). Note Ray's repeated line from "20th Century Man": "I'm a twentieth century man, but I don't wanna be here." And, yes, Ray can be pessimistic. Here's the couplet that opens and closes "Oklahoma, U.S.A": "All life we work, but work is a bore/If life's for livin', what's livin' for?" Maybe it's not so much depression as it is discontent. (I like to think it's the latter.) And stylistically, the album is all over the map--blues, country, music hall. But it all works. This is a very satisfying collection of songs. All of the bonus tracks were recorded at the same time (September/October 1971) and the same place (Morgan Studios) as the rest of the album, presumably in contention for inclusion but for whatever reason were left off. "Lavender Lane" is another Ray Davies' composition that bemoans the consequences of progress: "Oh Lord, such a pity that the world's gotta change." [Note: Like "Muswell Hillbilly," the lyrics of both songs reference Rosie Rooke.] "Mountain Woman" and "Kentucky Moon" first showed up on the 1998 Velvel re-issue. All three of these tracks would have fit thematically, but with a running time approaching forty-five minutes on the original album there simply wasn't space. The only other "new" songs are a demo of "Nobody's Fool" and a backing track of "Queenie." You also get an alternate instrumental take of "20th Century Man" and alternate versions "Have a Cuppa Tea" (which pushes Dave Davies guitar to the front with a more country sound) and somewhat slower "Uncle Son." Closing out the CD is a 50-second radio spot promoting the new album.If you are a vinyl junkie or a Kinks fan, this is a great redo of the album. The sound is much crisper and brighter than the original (on the horrible RCA Dynflex vinyl). Great bonus and live tracks.
