KING EDWARD VIII - AUTOGRAPH CIRCA 1941 CO-SIGNED BY: DUCHESS OF WINDSOR (WALLIS SIMPSON) - HFSID 257012 DUKE and DUCHESS OF WINDSOR Signatures of both an album leaf, apparently signed while he was Governor-General of the Bahamas during World War II. Signatures: "Edward" and "Wallis Windsor", 4x5 album leaf. Dated "11/4/41" in pencil (unknown hand) at lower left. In 1930, Edward, Prince of Wales, known for having a number of affairs, met and fell in love with a married American woman, Mrs. Wallis Simpson. After he succeeded his father, King George V, on January 20, 1936, concern about his private life grew in the Cabinet, especially over his association with Mrs. Simpson. Her status as a then two-time American divorce was unacceptable as potential Queen material. On December 10, 1936, KING EDWARD VIII (1894-1972) executed an Instrument of Abdication that was given legal effect the following day. He was never crowned, his reign lasted 325 days. In 1937, Edward, created Duke of Windsor by his brother who became King George VI, married Wallis Simpson. Edward and WALLIS, DUCHESS OF WINDSOR (1896-1986), settled in France and were married for 35 years. After abdicating, the Duke of Windsor and his Duchess moved to France. When Germany conquered that nation in 1940, the couple traveled to Spain and then Portugal. He had a defeatist attitude toward World War II and an unconcealed admiration for fascism, and the German Nazis apparently intended to restore him to the throne once they conquered England. In August 1941, a British warship was sent to take the Duke and Duchess to the Bahamas, where the former king was installed as Governor-General. These signatures date from the couple's residence in the Bahamas. He served capably there, but performed no further official duties after the war. Lightly soiled. Paperclip impression at blank right edge. Otherwise, fine condition. See more material from these signers: KING EDWARD VIII DUCHESS OF WINDSOR See more listings in our ROYALTY (410) category.
