HISTORICAL QUOTE: "In war there is no second prize for the runner-up."General Omar N. Bradley HISTORICAL / EDUCATIONAL NOTE: THE HJ TROOPS The HJ in Germany, was the youth organization of the German Political Party and its origins date back to 1922. From 1933 until 1945, it was the sole official youth organization in Germany and was partially a paramilitary organization; was composed of the selected German male youths aged 14 to 18. The German youngsters in the H. Youth (Deutsches Jungvolk in der HJugend or "DJ", also "DJV") for younger boys aged 10 to 14, and for girls it was the League of German Girls (Bund Deutsche Mädel or "BDM"). Originally intended to foster the ideology of the German Party, with the rise of the Führer the organization shifted its focus to become a paramilitary organization training young boys for service in the Reich. Membership in the HJ in 1923 was just over 1200, however by the end of 1933 the number was 2.3 million youths and by 1936 the number in the HJ exceeded 5 million. HISTORICAL / EDUCATIONAL NOTE CONTINUED: STURMGEWEHR 44 OR StG 44 CONTROLLABLE-FULL AUTOMATIC RIFLE The StG 44 (abbreviation of Sturmgewehr 44, "Storm Rifle 44") is a German controllable full automatic-fire rifle developed during World War II. It is also known under the designations MP 44 (Maschinenpistole 44).The StG 44 was the first successful and widely produced design to use a new shorter cartridge, which permitted controllable automatic fire from a weapon more compact than a typical battle rifle, coupled with the recognition that most aimed rifle fire in combat situations did not exceed a few hundred meters. The StG 44 was chambered for the 7.92x33mm Kurz cartridge, the shorter version of the German standard 7.92x57mm rifle round. In combination with the weapon's controllable automatic-fire design, it provided a compromise between the controllable firepower of a sub-machine gun at close quarters with the accuracy and power of a Karabiner 98k bolt-action rifle at intermediate ranges. By all accounts, the StG 44 fulfilled its role effectively, particularly on the Eastern Front, offering a greatly increased volume of fire compared to standard infantry rifles. It would go on to influence the development of the AK-47, which was developed in the years following the war. However, the StG 44 came too late during WWII to have a significant effect on the outcome of the war. Its lasting effect was its major influence on modern infantry small arms development, giving rise to an entire class of weapons using the name assault rifle.
