Description: KING & COUNTRY WWII BBA092 U.S. ARMY G.I. "B.A.R. GUNNER"... ARDENNES WINTER 1944 BATTLE OF THE BULGE SERIES... DECEMBER 1944 - JANUARY 1945*Note: the addition of the King & Country Company Registered Trademark Logo in the photos for this listing certifies that an authorized and licensed King & Country Dealer is offering this item for sale. Although, strictly speaking, the M1918 B.A.R. (Browning Automatic Rifle) was not a machine gun it was employed mostly in the light machine gun role within American WWII Infantry Squads. Each American infantry squad (usually 8-10 men) would always contain at least one soldier carrying a B.A.R. and both the M1 ‘Garand’ Rifle and B.A.R. used the same .30 cal. ammunition. King & Country's new B.A.R. Gunner is taking cover as he observes the enemy. The surprise attack caught the Allied forces completely off guard. United States forces bore the brunt of the attack and incurred their highest casualties for any operation during the war. The battle also severely depleted Germany's armored forces on the western front, and Germany was largely unable to replace them. German personnel, and later Luftwaffe aircraft (in the concluding stages of the engagement), also sustained heavy losses. Different forces referred to the battle by different names. The Germans referred to it officially as Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein ("Operation Watch on the Rhine") or usually Ardennen Offensive or Rundstedt-Offensive, while the French named it the Bataille des Ardennes ("Battle of the Ardennes"). The Allies called it the Ardennes Counteroffensive. The phrase "Battle of the Bulge" was coined by contemporary press to describe the way the Allied front line bulged inward on wartime news maps; the phrase “Battle of the Bulge” became the most widely used name for the battle. The German offensive was supported by several subordinate actions including Operations designed to stop Allied transport over the channel to the port city of Antwerp, These operations were intended to split the British and American Allied line in half, so the Germans could then proceed to encircle and destroy four Allied armies, forcing the Western Allies to negotiate a more favorable peace agreement with the Axis Powers. Once that was accomplished, Hitler could fully concentrate on the Eastern theatre of war. The German forces with utmost secrecy, minimizing radio traffic, and moving troops and equipment under cover of darkness planned the offensive. The Allies ignored intercepted German communications that indicated a major German offensive preparation in the area. The Germans achieved total surprise on the morning of 16 December 1944 due to a combination of Allied overconfidence, preoccupation with Allied offensive plans, and poor aerial reconnaissance. The Germans attacked a weakly defended section of the Allied line, taking advantage of heavily overcast weather conditions, which grounded the Allies' overwhelmingly superior air forces. Fierce resistance on the northern shoulder of the offensive around Elsenborn Ridge and in the south around the town of Bastogne blocked German access to key roads to the northwest and west that they counted on for success. Columns of armor and infantry that were supposed to advance along parallel routes found themselves on the same roads. This and terrain that favored the defenders threw the German advance behind schedule and allowed the Allies to reinforce the thinly placed troops. Improved weather conditions permitted Allied air attacks on German forces and supply lines, which sealed the failure of the offensive. In the wake of the defeat, many experienced German units were left severely depleted of men and equipment, as survivors retreated to the defenses of the Siegfried Line. Note: We have used a self-guided, GPS supported personal itinerary on several occasions to visit the Bastogne area, including the Baugnez '44 Museum, the site of the Malmedy Massacre, The 101st Airborne Museum, The Bastogne War Museum, the still existing foxholes of the 502nd and 506th P.I.R. and the pastoral surrounding area in Belgium. We have found the Belgian people, especially in and around the town of Bastogne, to be very friendly and still grateful to the Allies, especially the American forces, for their liberation… despite the huge loss of life and property damage suffered by the Belgian civilians. In addition, should you want to visit the area in Bastogne or any of the surrounding areas, we would be willing to share our experiences or trip itinerary with you, which may help to make your travel through the area easier and perhaps make the historical experience more valuable.
