Full title: Sounds, Words and Actions: 49 Movement Games to Enhance the Language Art Skills of Elementary School Children. Most living animals may be characterized by the ability to engage in self-initiated movements; while only the human animal can speak and write and read using complex systems of words and phrases. The games which follow are an attempt to combine a child's inherent needs for movement with the demands placed upon him to read, and to otherwise deal with various words and letter symbols. Many of the games have been developed as the result of several years of research at the Perceptual Motor Learning Laboratory at UCLA, while others have suggested themselves as the result of research conducted at San Jose State College, the University of Maryland, ad Stanford University. The results of this work have demonstrated the usefulness of a movement approach to academic learning. This methodology has been shown to be particularly useful when working with children who may evidence learning problems of various kinds. A teacher may employ these games in various ways, they may provide a daily "break" in the more restrictive classroom lesson, they may be given only once or twice a week, or they may be utilized as a central core around which an entire curriculum may be constructed. The research has indicated that from 5 to 20 children may be engaged in these games at a time, with a single teacher in charge; while when the results of teaching by these games have been compared to special small-group classroom tutoring, the results have almost always favored the active games approach. Although the sections are not mutually exclusive, the material has been divided for convenience into four parts, the first dealing with letter recognition, the second with phonics and spelling, the third with general linguistic skills, while the final one contains games which can enhance reading and listening skills. Each section is preceded by a card containing special teaching ideas appropriate for use within that section; while at the end of the card packet is contained a bibliography, together with a materials list so that the enterprising teacher may further explore the literature to expand his/her knowledge of how to employ this novel and useful approach to teaching.
