Description: Condition Continued: There is a light nick on the top edge of a group of pages in the Bibliography, quite minor. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It's in solid shape, but has a few imperfections, small spots of rubbing/scuffing off the spine edges and bottom edge of the front, also a bit at the front corners. There's a small stain just off the bottom edge of the rear cover and next to that there is a small tear. The white flaps are in solid shape. They have a few minor nicks and creases off the top and bottom edges. They are quite clean. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I've had the jacket in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book. I removed it to better examine the jacket. I'll be replaced before I scan the photos. University Of Pennsylvania Press, Philadelphia, 1970. ISBN: 0812276051. Hardcover in Dust Jacket. Written by Ray L. Birdwhistell. First Edition (NAP). There is a fairly long and interesting Wikipedia profile of Dr. Birdwhistell. He published a large number of essays in books and journals, and he wrote two books. The first one, Introduction to Kinesics: An Annotation System for Analysis of Body Motion and Gesture, is quite rare. My copy of his second book is unique as well, it will be the Only signed copy for sale anywhere on the Internet, the only signed copy of either of his books. The signed inscription is on the blank first front end paper. It reads 'For Lou + Ella and the pleasure of their company--Ray Birdwhistell.' That would be Lou and Ella Fierman. Lou Fierman penned 'Fierman' at the top corner of the signed page. 'Lou Fierrman was 'an innovator in the field of psychotherapy and psychiatry, a longtime Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University.' He was also the author of several books on the topic of psychotherapy and psychiatry. From his Wikipedia profile: 'Dr. Birdwhistell founded kinesics as a field of inquiry and research. He coined the term kinesics, meaning "facial expression, gestures, posture and gait, and visible arm and body movements" He estimated that "no more than 30 to 35 percent of the social meaning of a conversation or an interaction is carried by the words." He argued that "words are not the only containers of social knowledge." Birdwhistell's first book Introduction to Kinesics was essentially an internal publication for the Department of State. His second book, Kinesics and Context has been cited far more often, and, along with a brief encyclopedia article on kinesics, has had far greater influence on the study of communication behavior. Many of Birdwhistell's publications were short pieces, gathered together to make up Kinesics and Context.Although he is best known for inventing kinesics, his influence was much larger: he helped establish the logical underpinnings of language and social interaction research generally, and such approaches as the coordinated management of meaning.'A blurb from Margaret Mead: 'Few brilliant pioneer workers have the opportunity that Prof. Birdwhistell has had to see his unique observations validated through technical innovation. So he was able to develop kinesics, which is now become part of a systematic anthropological investigation.'
