KEWEENAW DATOLITE SPECIMEN QUINCY MINE HOUGHTON COUNTY MI 2-1/4 x 1-3/4 x 3/8 IN

Description: KEWEENAW DATOLITE SPECIMEN FROM QUINCY MINE HOUGHTON COUNTY MICHIGAN 2-1/4 x 1-3/4 x 3/8 INCH - - You are bidding on one datolite specimen. My uncles and cousins all worked in the copper mines of the Keweenaw. To hear them tell the tale, they hated whenever they drilled into Datolite because it mucked up the drills. Datolite forms in very attractive crystals that can be highly lustrous and very sparkly or have frosted crystal faces. A totally different form of Datolite are the oval-shaped nodules that lack any distinctive crystal form. These nodules can be sliced and polished to show beautiful coloring and patterns within the nodule. Datolite was named in 1806 by Jens Esmark, a Danish-Norwegian professor of mineralogy, for the Greek term "dateishai", which means to divide, alluding to the often grainy aggregates of Datolite which break easily. Datolite is a calcium boron hydroxide nesosilicate. Most commonly light green, also minty green, dark green, yellowish green, yellow, white, and colorless. Rarely red or pink from Hematite or manganese inclusions. Nodular forms may be white, gray, beige, orange, pink, red, brown, and yellow, and are often multicolored or have lighter and darker color zones. It is common in the copper deposits of the Lake Superior region of Michigan. It occurs as a secondary mineral in mafic igneous rocks often filling vesicles along with zeolites in basalt. Unlike most localities throughout the world, the occurrence of Datolite in the Lake Superior region is usually fine grained in texture and possesses colored banding. Much of the coloration is due to the inclusion of copper or associated minerals in progressive stages of hydrothermal precipitation. Photos and scans at 5X show the entire lot. U.S. domestic shipping & handling free. Overseas buyers please request cost by email. Take a look at the other collectibles I have for sale.
