Basis for the 1950 film noir directed by Jules Dassin and starring Richard Widmark and Gene Tierney. Dassin's last film before he was blacklisted, a classic of the noir style, produced by Twentieth Century-Fox but shot in London. The inexpensive paper used in this edition has aged with the result of a small triangular chip breaking off from the bottom corner of the title page and the one following. Very rare presentation copy, inscribed in 1952. The original black leather binding used by Kersh for these gift copies, (usually later printings) had severely deteriorated (also as usual) and was replaced by an expert binder / conservator.
