Description: Photo of a dapper gentleman, that reads: "A happy New Year and Merry Christman - Yours truly, J. Miles Kepheart - Dec. 22, 1879" on the reverse. John Miles Kepheart was born 31 January 1839 in Pennsylvania, son of Philip Brenner Kephart (1810 - 1885) and Martha Jane Mitchell (1816 - 1885). He was 1st Lt. during the Civil War, serving as Quartermaster, Co. F & S, 84th Regt., Pa. Infantry. On the 25th of March 1890, he married widow Emma Graham Wakefield, born about 1844 in Pennsylvania, daughter of Walter Graham (1805 - 1879) and Nancy O'Bryan (1811 - 1879). There was an interesting article in the paper about their marriage: "Seven o'clock last evening marked the culmination of a very romantic love affair. It was the marriage of Mile Kephart, of Fleming, Pa., who is a cousin of Senator Matthew Stanley Quay, and Mrs. Wakefield, a widow, who now lies on her deathbed, brought there by that fatal disease consumption. Mrs. Wakefield was formally Miss Graham, and in her youth was the affianced bride of Mr. Kephart. But a Mr. Wakefield coming along she broke faith with her first lover and married the second, who, after a few years of married life died. The old love been sprung up, and now on her deathbed she was married to the promised husband of her girlhood days."It must be noted that Emma lived several years longer than anticipated, passing away 1 April 1898. She was laid to rest in her family's plot in Milroy, Mifflin Co., Pennsylvania.Miles died at age 91 in the Soldiers Home in Hampton, Virginia and was brought home to rest with his parents and siblings in Union Cemetery in Bellefonte, Centre Co., Pennsylvania.Photograph measures 6 x 8 inches and comes from the P. E. Chillman photography studio, which was possibly located in Unionville, Pennsylvania. Miles and his two younger brothers were working for their father there in this time frame. The photo is in very good condition for a photo over 140 years old, but is not perfect. There is aging and foxing. Please see photo scans for inspection.
