Description: KENNETH JAY LANE: The Man, The Legend, the Jewelry! The mere name of KENNETH JAY LANE often evokes sighs of wistful admiration from wearers, lovers and collectors of high-end designer fashion jewelry all around the world! Kenneth was a man with a rare gift for designing jewelry that appeals to ladies of all types and from all cultures as his seemingly boundless diversity in the realm of personal creativity enabled him to create an endless variety of designs, including Art Deco creations and pieces inspired by nature, animals, mythology, astrology, fairy tales, history and much more. As an individual, Kenneth was a man of suave elegance and singular wit who had a highly developed aesthetic sense as well as an understanding of a need for jewelry that could be acquired without spending hundreds of thousands of dollars yet without sacrificing style, quality, or beauty. When speaking of his unique designs in an interview with The Times in 1993, Kenneth said, "I think it's called 'having the eye.' It's not necessarily reinventing the wheel." Even though Kenneth Jay Lane would later count such famous and fashionable ladies as The Duchess of Windsor, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Diana and Nancy Reagan among both his friends as well as his star-studded clientele, his beginnings were far from affluent. Kenneth was the son of an automative parts supplier who developed a deep and abiding love of fashion while still a boy. In spite of the fact that he later confessed to wanting "the best of everything," Kenneth was a self-made and self-taught man who transformed himself from a seemingly average "nobody" into a jet-setting businessman fully capable of mixing and mingling with the creme de la creme of high society. Considering the nearly unprecedented success as a jewelry designer that Kenneth Jay Lane ultimately experienced, it is ironic that his jewelry designing began as a hobby or "sideline." Although he had begun designing jewelry in his spare time, Kenneth was a shoe designer for over a decade, and even commuted to Paris to study with Roger Vivier (who famously designed the shoes the legendary French actress and icon Catherine Deneuve wore in the film, "Belle de Jour") while working for Christian Dior. It was when Kenneth was hired to design bejeweled shoes - many with rhinestone toes and heels - for an Arnold Scaasi show that Kenneth's affinity for working with gemstones was publicly noticed. In 1962, Kenneth Jay Lane began designing his own jewelry collection and, within a few years, his designs could be found in and were being sold by most of the Fifth Avenue stores. Kenneth Jay Lane's collaboration with the Duchess of Windsor- a collaboration that resulted in the creation of some of Kenneth's most collectible designs- is just one of many notable achievements. He also worked closely with the legendary Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, creating replicas of pieces she owned that were originally from such posh jewelry stores as Cartier and Van Cleef and Arpels. There are several books devoted to Kenneth Jay Lane's jewelry, including his best-selling memoir, "Faking It," a book Kenneth co-authored with Harrice Simmons Miller. Kenneth, who was a benefactor of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was honored when, in 2007, the museum named a room of European Orientalist paintings after him that was part of its renovated galleries of 19th and early 20th Century European paintings. Although, sadly, Kenneth Jay Lane passed away in 2017, his legend lives on through the legacy of his extraordinary jewelry. Kenneth's ingenious designs continue to be worn, cherished or collected by women around the world, including many of today's most famous style and fashion icons such as Angelina Jolie, Lady Gaga, Madonna, and "Sex and the City" Fashionista Sarah Jessica Parker. APPLE : Symbolism, History, Cultural & Spiritual Significance Although the well-known saying "An Apple a day keeps the doctor away" has been so commonly quoted that it is now sometimes labeled as "trite," the truth is that even if an apple a day will not prevent illness, the Apple is among the most healthy and nutritious of fruits. However, it is the rich tapestry of centuries' old, multi-cultural Symbolism that truly makes the Apple one remarkable piece of fruit. Since ancient times, the Apple tree has been known as the "Tree of Love" and because of this, the tree is closely linked with Aphrodite, the legendary Goddess of Love. It was said that the first Apple was actually created by Dionysus, the God of wine and fertility and that he presented it to Aphrodite as a gift. In ancient mythology, the Apple tree was regarded as one of the most sacred of trees and was believed to symbolize good health and future happiness. Its role in Greek mythology is of special significance. Gaia, the Earth Goddess, is said to have given Hera, the supreme goddess, an apple tree as a wedding gift upon the occasion of her marriage to Zeus, King of the Gods. This Apple tree that was bestowed upon Hera by Gaia sets the stage for the most famous apples in all of classical myth, The Golden Apples of Hesperides which were in the Garden of Hesperides - otherwise known as goddess Hera's Orchard. According to legend, branches bearing golden apples were among the couples' wedding gifts. The Hesperides- "Nymphs of the Evening" - were given the task of tending to the Grove of golden apples. The Golden Apples of Hesperides continue to play a prominent role in Greek mythology and have a pivotal role in The Judgement of Paris. In this memorable myth, Eris, the Goddess of Discord, plucks the Apple of discord from the Garden of Hesperides. This act leads to Paris being given permission to abduct Helen of Troy, a deed which provokes the start of the notorious Trojan War. Although it has frequently been surmised in religious circles that the Apple is the "forbidden fruit" of "Garden of Eden" fame, there is actually no tangible proof to suggest that the Apple was, in fact, the "forbidden" fruit. It is believed that a simple misunderstanding between two similar sounding words in the Latin language- one meaning 'evil' and one meaning "apple" - is responsible for the Apple being unjustly maligned. Throughout the centuries, the APPLE has enjoyed a prominent place in works of literature and is also mentioned in the Bible. In the Old Testament, apples are associated with "knowledge" and in the "Song of Solomon," the Apple is linked to sensuality, sexual desire and ideas of beauty. Some of the finest and most celebrated poets of all-time have turned to the alluring APPLE for poetic inspiration. The illustrious Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem, "The Golden Apple" was inspired by the Hesperides myth as was the unforgettable poet W.B.Yeats' poem, "Song of Wandering Aengus." The complexity of the symbolism surrounding the APPLE lends mystique to a fruit that may sometimes be seen as "commonplace." In truth, the Apple is anything but ordinary. In the United States and elsewhere, the Apple is often linked to education and during the autumnal season, back-to-school themed merchandise often features depictions of apples. This link between schools and apples dates back to Sweden and Denmark in the 1700s, when apples were gifted to teachers as a mark of their knowledge and intellectual prowess. It is believed that the ancestor of the domesticated Apple we see in supermarkets today is the Malus Sieversii, a wild apple tree found in Tian Shan mountains of Central Asia. Wild apples were said to have been plucked from this tree and taken along the Silk Road, where they evolved and hybridized. The Apple is said to have reached various regions of the world at different points in time. In Italy, archaeologists have uncovered evidence to suggest that apples were consumed starting from 4000 BCE and in the Middle East, archeological discoveries indicate that apples were eaten from the third millennium BCE. In the 17th century, European colonialists brought apples to North America where they continue to flourish in popularity. From a culinary perspective, the APPLE remains a delicious and versatile fruit that can be used in both sweet and savory dishes and is also enjoyable in its raw, organic state without the addition of flavorings or additives. The APPLE has been the subject of well-known artwork as well and was a source of inspiration for such iconic artists as 16th Century German painter, printmaker and Renaissance Theorist Extraordinaire Albrecht Durer and 20th Century Belgian Surrealist artist Rene Magritte. The French artist and Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cezanne was so enamored of the Apple that he often told those sitting for portraits to "Be An Apple!" He once proclaimed, "With an Apple, I want to astonish Paris," and Cezanne's still lifes with apples, in which he brought his visionary perspective to the art form, reimagining how three-dimensional objects - including apples - could be captured from multiple perspectives instead of a single perspective, astonished not merely Paris but the world, at large. There is little doubt that Cezanne would have concured with the celebrated American naturalist, essayist, poet, philosopher and leading figure of the Transcendentalist movement Henry David Thoreau who once wrote, "Surely the Apple is the noblest of fruits." ITEM DESCRIPTION With the ingenuity of a master magician, Kenneth Jay Lane has elevated what might have been an "ordinary" necklace in the hand of many jewelry makers and has transformed it into a mesmerizing MASTERPIECE - a necklace worthy of being worn by supermodels on runways and in photo shoots! It is not difficult to understand why this APPLE pendant necklace is not only featured (on page 27) in Nancy Schiffer's best-selling book, "FABULOUS," a book dedicated to Kenneth Jay Lane's jewelry, but is also considered among Kenneth Jay Lane's MOST iconic and popular pieces of jewelry of all-time. As Kenneth said, when speaking of this ICONIC Apple necklace, "This design stayed in the collection and 'took off in 2006 to become a fabulous success. Now we can't make enough of them." The STAR of the necklace is, of course, the APPLE! And what an apple this is - sculpted with such dexterity and with such an attention to detail that it looks like a "real" apple! Ravishing bright red enamel adorns the Apple itself, with its leaves being formed from opulent 22K Yellow gold-plated metal, encrusted with dazzling, prong-set simulated white diamonds- all made from the finest Austrian Swarovski crystals. The beautiful gold plated rope chain that the Apple is suspended from is the perfect match! This is one of those STANDOUT pieces that will turn heads and start conversations! It is SO chic and unusual and eye-catching! Whether you choose to wear it with jeans or slacks and a simple blouse or sweater or pair it with a dress or suit, you will always find it adds that touch of unique glamour that will make you stand out from the crowd! To me, this seems like a necklace that a fashionable and classy lady who is also a trendsetter - such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis or The Duchess of Cambridge (i.e., Kate Middleton) - would have in her jewelry wardrobe. The measurements on this piece are as follows: The APPLE measures approximately 1 1/2 inches in width and approximately 1 1/2 inches in length. The rope chain measures approximately 32 inches in length. This Apple pendant necklace is SIGNED/stamped and it is from the exceptional Estate of a film and television star who collected high-end designer jewelry for many decades. It is in "Like New"/MINT Vintage Condition, appearing unworn. It comes with its original "signature" red felt KJL pouch as seen in the pictures. We only have ONE available!
