Nartker, American (b.1930, d.1998) – "An innovative artist creating abstract modern paintings, prints and ceramics. While in the Air Force, he was stationed in Japan for over two years. This time and place profoundly impacted his development as an artist. One can hardly appreciate his art without considering the formative influence of Japanese art and art educators. He attended the Dayton Art Institute and graduated with a BFA from the University of Dayton and received a Master of Fine Art in 1960 from the Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Nartker taught at the Dayton Art Institute and then accepted a teaching position at the College of Mount St. Joseph, Ohio. A career which spanned 30 years, he was acting chairman of the Art Department and established the departments of printmaking and ceramics at the Mount. In his memory, a scholarship fund was established for aspiring art students to encourage the creativity he so cherished. His works are in many major collections, including one painting in the Air Force Academy. He had participated in over 200 exhibitions and had won top awards in painting, printmaking and ceramics at the Ohio State Fair. John’s works captivated thousands throughout the world. Other associations included membership in the Ohio Designer-Craftsmen group, the Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors, the Cincinnati Art Club (with showings), Scholastic Art Awards and the Religious Art Association.Of note he created near life-size chess sets made of drain tile in the mid 80s."
