With that in mind, we designed the Whisker® couplers with an even longer-lasting and more reliable design. We took everything you loved about the No.5® and improved upon it. No more fumbling with centering springs. No more multi-piece assemblies. The Whisker® series of couplers is a true drop-in coupler. Use Kadee® Whisker® couplers in your next model and enjoy the most reliable and smooth coupling experience you've ever had. Always made right here in the USA with legendary Made In America quality. The Kadee® “SBE” bottom shelf couplers have a functioning bottom shelf designed not to allow the opposing knuckle to slide down on those dips, bumps, or transitions. During the 1970s, the Type “E” coupler with a bottom shelf was developed as the Type “SBE” coupler and eventually became mandatory for all new and rebuilt cars as a minimum requirement. The prototype bottom shelf was designed to keep a broken knuckle from falling to the roadbed and presenting a derailment hazard. The shelf also prevents vertical coupler uncoupling during derailment. The #120 coupler can be mounted in the supplied #242 Gearboxes or directly into most manufacturer's molded-on gearboxes.
