Lavishly illustrated with period postcards that invite the reader to an intimate look at what the young Charles Burchfield may have actually seen, and to imagine how he might have transcribed and transformed these images in his art. Many of these early postcards are rare and unpublished, and feature views and places Burchfield may have encountered on his daily walks in Salem, as well as to nearby towns and countryside. Other postcards capture the essence of Cleveland, Ohio during Burchfields years at the Cleveland School of Art, and the bicycle route the artist traveled on his way home from Cleveland to Salem. Additional illustrations include ephemera related to Burchfields art school years, and his job at the Mullins Factory in Salem, as well as reproductions of artworks by the artist that relate to the postcard images. To further assist in channeling Burchfields experience, many revealing excerpts from his extensive journals are included throughout. The book closes with Confessions of a Burchfield Geek, the authors thoughts on coming to know, and love, Charles Burchfield and the art that he shared with the world.
