June Kapos Studio Pottery Brutalist 3-Hole Organically-Shaped Vase Vintage 1960s

Description: June Kapos Studio Pottery Brutalist 3-Hole Organically-Shaped Vase Vintage 1960s Signed Mid-Century Modern Vintage Studio Art Pottery by June E. Kapos, Protégé of Karl Martz. The roses pictured are for display & are not included. 6” wide x 4.75” deep x 5.5” height Wonderful organic monumental museum-quality and extremely rare, signed vase with three openings by June E. Kapos. Works by June E. Kapos of this level of execution are found in museums and private collections and rarely come up for sale. The color and composition of this vase was executed in the mid-1960’s and is reminiscent of the work she exhibited at the Syracuse Ceramic Nationals in 1964 and 1966. The vase is fairly heavy and exhibits an organic earth tone drip pattern, some differently-toned glaze lines, & intentional textures that occurs on opposite sides of the vase, giving it three-dimensional quality which allows it to be displayed on all sides. It emulates a stone with a wooden-like texture & glaze. It’s like no other piece of pottery I have ever seen. This is the work of a truly accomplished artist. June Ellenwood was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on 24 February 1927. After graduating from Southside High School, she was educated at the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee and at Indiana University, where she obtained a BS in Art Education and attended graduate school in Ceramics. While at IU she studied under Karl Martz. Pottery was an important part of June’s life. As an independent artist she exhibited widely, successfully entering work for over 50 national and regional competitive exhibitions across the country (including several Creative Crafts Council Biennials, and events at the Smithsonian, Corcoran Gallery of Art, and Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York) and winning many awards. Her work, which was also exhibited in over 20 one-man shows, ranged from decorative but functional pieces to more sculptural objects and included both wheel-thrown and hand-built pieces. June’s work evolved substantially through her career, adding new materials and techniques. Her later pieces especially reflected her strong interest in the southwest and the work of Native American potters. During her long career she also passed on her skills, teaching ceramics at Indiana University, the San Diego Museum of Fine Arts and numerous venues in the Washington Area. June was an active member of the Kiln Club of Washington, and its president in 1984 and 1985. June exhibited at the Syracuse Ceramic Nationals in 1964 and 1966. This vase form is signed with incised KAPOS. There are no post-studio issues, such as chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. This vase has a nice ring when tapped. Everything is original. This would be great in a William Bill Wyman era decor. This Art Pottery is the PERFECT addition to your Mid-Century Modern Art Pottery collection.
