Description: Winner receives a signed ink painting on paper by well listed French Expressionist artist Jules Pascin (1885-1930). The painting is titled "Girl From The Folies Bergère Praying" and dates to 1929 according to the gallery label on the verso. The painting is hand signed in the lower right corner, along with the Atelier Pascin blindstamp, seen magnifed in picture 5. The painting has provenance from Nathan A. Bernstein Gallery, New York, NY, with original gallery label still affixed to the verso, seen magnified in picture 7. Not examined out of the frame, the painting appears to be in excellent original condition with no rips, tears, repairs, foxing, creasing, toning, or in-painting. The original gallery frame is in very good condition with no major damage, but there are small losses, the worst being a 5" section along the top edge. Picture 6 shows the upper left corner of the frame magnified to get an idea of the edge damages to the frame. The painting is a real gem and ready for hanging as-is or the new owner may wish to have the frame touched up. The frame measures roughly 23.5" x 30.25", with the image measuring roughly 14" x 21". Please note the pictures may not be as clear as we'd like due to the settings on the camera to reduce the glare. Below is some information about the artist, whose auction results include sales up to $315,303. Please feel free to ask us any questions you may have prior to bidding or making an offer. Thank you for checking out our listing. Jules Pascin (1885-1930) was a Bulgarian-born French Expressionist painter. Known under the pseudonym of the “Prince of Montparnasse,” Pascin mainly painted women, often nude or in stages of undress, in a fleeting, gestural aesthetic akin to the movements of Fauvism or Cubism. Born in Vidin, Bulgaria on March 31, 1885 to an affluent Sephardic Jewish family, he was educated in Austria and Germany before moving to Paris in 1905. There, he quickly found artistic popularity and became associated with the Modernist movement. He regularly exhibited prints and drawings in various important Parisian salons, including the Salon des Indépendants and satellite exhibitions of the Berlin Secession. Despite achieving success in Europe and North America—Pascin became a naturalized US citizen with the help of Alfred Stieglitz in 1920—he never achieved the critical discourse he craved. Eventually succumbing to depression and alcoholism, he took his own life on the eve of an important solo show on June 5, 1930 at the age of 45. Pascin’s work was appreciated throughout his life and beyond, marked by such achievements as his inclusion in the notorious 1913 Armory Show in New York. Today, his work can be found in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Louvre in Paris, the Art Institute of Chicago, and others.
