Juan David is the only caricaturist whose works are in permanent exhibition at the Cuban National Museum in Havana. Master of Cuban caricature. Juan David is an exceptional artist that made the personal caricature his main mode of expression. In his native Cienfuegos, at age 20, he debuted in the world of personal exhibitions, exhibiting some 30 cartoons and some portraits in charcoal. Among the greats of culture caught by his pencil are the painters Picasso, Wifredo Lam, René Portocarrero and Mariano Rodríguez; the dancer Alicia Alonso; the writers Alejo Carpentier, José Lezama Lima, Hemingway, Miguel Angel Asturias, Pablo Neruda and Pablo Armando Fernández; the musicians Ignacio Villa (Bola de Nieve) and Igor Stravinsky. In the mid-70s Juan David decided to devote himself to painting, but without abandoning the caricature, his favorite technique was color ink, attracted by its transparent luminosity. He also worked with graphite on cardboard and created many of his paintings using mixed media on cardboard. Juan David died in Havana, Cuba on August 8, 1981.
