Tolkien For sale is a first impression copy from the first 3-volume British paperback edition of The Lord of the Rings. The first time The Lord of the Rings was issued in paperback in the UK was in 1968 in a one volume edition with cover art by Pauline Baynes. That edition notably lacked the full appendices at the end of The Return of the King. It wasn’t until 1974 that a three volume edition was published in paperback to follow this. The first impression of the 1974 edition was intended solely for export. Each volume was priced at £.65p. The second impression (also released in 1974) was used for domestic sales. The price was raised to £.75p due to an increase in paper cost. According to Wayne G. Hammond’s A Descriptive Bibliography, “The second and third impressions were sold as separate volumes and as sets in a paper sleeve featuring a colour illustration by Tolkien…”. This first impression was not sold with the paper sleeve and seems to have been entirely exported for sale in Australia. While the second and third impressions are still commonly found in the UK, the first is not, with many copies remaining in Australia.
